What is Child Protection Mediation?
Mediation is a way of resolving differences using the help of a professional called a mediator. The reason a mediator can be helpful is because (s)he doesn’t take sides, make decisions for you, or judge you.
The mediator begins by bringing together all the people involved in the conflict and encourages them to talk openly and honestly about their concerns. Because this conversation happens in a safe and friendly place, mediation can bring about creative solutions.
How can mediation help me?
Mediation is a way of resolving conflicts outside of court. By staying focused on what is best for the children, it is often possible to find a middle ground to which everyone can agree.
How does it work?
A referral is made to the Toronto Mediation Centre by someone involved in the conflict. The Centre contacts a professional mediator at a convenient location, and the mediator gets things started.
Steps:
- The mediator meets with each person individually so they can talk about their situation.
- All parties to the dispute are invited to come together for one or more joint mediation sessions.
- When the mediation is complete, the mediator writes a letter to all parties and their lawyers outlining the areas agreed upon.
- The letter is reviewed by the lawyers to make sure the decisions reached in mediation work for everyone.
